Decluttering: Sending Clothing To Thredup For Their Brand Partner Clean Out Kit

UPDATE: 4.27.2024- Thredup’s Partner Brand Clean Out program has changed. I feel it does not benefit the general customer as oppose to a customer who does not care to what happens to their items.

A few posts back I mentioned I have been paring down my inventory. For sellable, good condition, clothes I have been sending things to thredup. There are actually countless blog & youtube videos about thredup. I’m going to skip what they are and just go straight to my personal experience. I currently sent 2 boxes of clothing and have 1 box still on it’s way there to one of their warehouses. I have sent clean out kits before but this is the first time I’ve used their partner clean out kits. Basically instead of a commission based clean out kit, a Thredup X Brand partner clean out kit is usually a direct pay out in the chosen brand’s gift card.

What I Sent Out And How Much I Got Back In Gift Cards

Box 1 : Gap Gift Card : $114

Box 2: Vera Bradley Gift Card: $73

For both boxes I sent stuff that didn’t sell for me. Each box had about 20-25 pcs of clothing with mostly low end brands, or out of season clothing. They were all in good condition, but didn’t sell. I was going to donate these items and get a tax write off. I figure I’ll try the partner kit first.

Am I Happy With The Payout/Gift Card And Why

I’m happy with what I got. I didn’t lose too much money with the gift card pay out. I will eventually start sending my better brands. For now, I’ll send in items I generally price $25 and below. Since I can’t list, and thrift as much as I use to, I have to focus more on a higher ASP. The acceptance rate for me for the boxes are ranges from 53% -60%.

Why You Should Stick To The Thredup X Brand Partner Clean Out

Another reason why I’ll be sending more items is they process the boxes so much faster than their clean out bags/boxes. I have boxes that wasn’t a partner kit still processing after 16 weeks of being ACCEPTED. They are obviously processing the thredup Partner kits faster. My theory is that the partnerships is more profitable compared to processing the regular clean out kits. Honestly, I get it. The economic market seems to be entering into another recession. Having a faster payout via a gift card is probably less of a risk for their business model.

Sending Things To ThredUp Is A Bit Of A Gamble

The thing about sending partner/clean out kits is that it’s a bit of a gamble. Thredup can be inconsistent with how they manage their warehouses. I’m not complaning btw. It’s just the truth. There is also a risk they can lose your clean out kit, and give you a rather small payout unless you can prove what was inside. If you pay for them to return your items, they may have lost some items. From watching other ppl tell their experience, the time to for the your items to get delivered, accepted, listed, sell, pay out takes forever. It’s one of the reasons why it’s a last resort for me.

Still I’m going to use it to send things I need to declutter. I’m slowly moving along with the decluttering. My reselling side hustle hasn’t been maintained lately. Now I need to focus on donating/throwing away hard goods that didn’t sell. If you used thredup before are you happy with the payouts?
