Autism Parenting: A New Special Interest For My ASD Hyperlexic Son

For the past few months Baby Hulk has gained new special interests. In the beginning of the year he developed an interest in minecraft due to some of his friends in his class being into minecraft. That’s not surprising, but because of him playing , and watching youtubers videos on minecraft he developed a special interest in logos. Not just any logos. Mostly logos he can find in his life. So logos you find in everyday life in America. I’m going to assume some of the youtube videos he was consuming he notice some gamers squee in delight in logos made in their minecraft.

Logos As A Special Interest

For this post I’m going to write mostly about the logos. I thought it was strange he was into logos at first, but it made so much sense. He is hyperlexic. Even now obtaining new toys with letters still makes him so happy. Finding logos in his life is pretty easy. We do live in a logo filled world if you think about it.

As a summer gift for him I purchased this from amazon . It’s a sticker pack for various brands.

It came with hundreds of stickers. I had to remove a handful of inappropriate ones. It had enough logos with the name of the brands for him to still be playing with this sticker set. My house in currently covered in these things.

Improving Writing Skills

Because of his interest in logos I noticed he has been writing more often. Baby Hulk hates writing so I was surprised of this sudden interest in writing. You want to know how an ASD mind can work when it comes to special interests? Baby hulk tries to learn the names of the font of these brands. He manages to google it on his ipad. I see him trying to draw the font. It shocked me a bit when he was telling me that “I can’t find waltograph to write Disney.”

His Favorite Logo

Right now his favorite logo is the Toys R Us. I told him his dad, and I use to go to Toys R Us when it was still open. He seemed pretty interested in my stories. Eventually he started telling me Toys R Us is “gone” , and “burned down”. Apparently he has been watching videos of people touring Toys R Us, and people putting videos of Toys R Us being destroyed. His obsession with Toys R Us makes me a little sad I can’t take him to the ones my husband grew up with. I know Toys R Us are in Macy’s, but it’s not the same.

My husband and I will eventually trek down to our local Macy’s, and show him. Even though it’s not the same, he will enjoy seeing the Logos. That’s enough to make him smile.

Cheers to a good July!
